Your Source for 1911 Pistols

The 1911 Pistol is one of the most popular handguns on the planet. With almost a century of use the 1911 pistol saw conflicts and competitions, before a good amount of other firearms were even thought of.

When the standard .38 Long Colt revolver failed to stop the Moro warriors during the Philippine-American War of the 1890s, the U.S Army decided that a suitable self-loading pistol with a .45 caliber cartridge was needed in order to ensure stopping power against enemy attacks.

Meanwhile, a man by the name of John M. Browning, a worker for Colt, had designed a semi-automatic pistol, based around a cartridge that was similar to the .38. Upon hearing that the military was in need of a semi-automatic handgun, Browning redesigned his pistol to meet the Army specifications and submitted it for appraisal.

During the first round of inspections, the Army deemed that Browning’s pistol was not up to par and so Browning began to modify his gun once again. The second round of tests took place on March 3, 1911 and required each gun to fire 6,000 rounds. After every 1,000 rounds, the pistol was cleaned and oiled, and after the completion of all 6,000 rounds, the pistol was inspected for any damages.

Browning’s pistol passed the tests, becoming the first firearm to ever do so, which led to the Army formally adopting Browning’s pistol as the weapon of choice on March 29, 1911, under the name M1911. Two years later both the Marine Corps and the Navy also adopted the M1911.

After being used in World War 1, the military modified Browning’s M1911 in order to optimize it for combat by adding a slightly larger ejection port, arching the main-spring housing to allow the gun to fit better in a person’s hand and shortening the trigger.

Leading up to the Second World War, the M1911A1 continued to grow in popularity and demand. During the war itself, nearly two million units were acquired by the U.S Government. Following the war, the M1911A1 continued to be the standard-issue pistol for the U.S Armed Forces and was used in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

After years of service, however, the M1911A1 was replaced by the military. Despite this, the M1911 has still been used in times of need, seeing service in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
