9-4-2008 My daughter and I bought 2 LCP's this past weekend. We went to put some rounds through them to test em. We were shooting Magtech FMJ, 95gr. We also shot Winchester FMJ, 95gr, plus Remington JHP (Hollow Point), 90 gr. My daughters gun had two - failure to eject and two - jams between the 40th and 60th rounds. Then the trigger mechanism broke. Most of the rounds were HP with some FMJ mixed in. We're not sure but wonder if the trigger mechanism going bad may have had something to do with the jamming. We shot about 150 rounds through my gun, with about 60 of those being HP and the other 90 being FMJ. We did regular fire and rapid fire trying to see if the gun would jam. My pistol never missed a beat. I had a hard time hitting a 4" target at 4 yards but consistently put them in a 12" area at that distance. Again, this is a close quarters weapon. I'm 6'-1" at 207lbs. The gun handled well in my hand. I only had 1 1/2 fingers on the handle with my pinky finger tucked under the magazine but the gun remained solid in my hand. I like the longer, stiffer trigger pull and view it as a fair Safety. One gun worked, one didn't. If my daughters gun malfunction is a fluke, then this is a good CC gun. Jury is still out that until we get it back and put more rounds through them. Gun purchased at Cabella's for $299.00 We both like the gun.

200 rounds no complaints,great quality gun,keltec looks like i sand cast it in my back yard,rugers lcp looks like it was made by a professional.shoots straight,i think all the people having problems dont know how to clean and lube a gun,thanks to my dad and the us army for teaching me!!!!!!!!!!!

The size of this weapon shocked me immediately,
this has to be the smallest gun I have ever seen
Truly amazing.
Worth the small price, if you need to carry it I worn you you wont even know you have it.
The catch for the slide was sticky but who needs the slide to stay back.
I would have the feature removed as it is useless.
Would be nice instead to have 1 more magazine with an additional bullet or to.
Other than that, really darn cool gun.

Awesome little pocket pistol. Looks identical to the Kel Tec 380 PAT that I also have but has a lot more qulaity and balance. Very loud handgun (as expected for small frame 380. Nice fit and finish, Ruger quality and much easier to rock the slide back than the Kel Tec. Much improved trigger pull as well. This is a keeper. I ordered two LCP 380''s and they arrived in two months.

RUGER LCP

This is my second post about this pistol. In the first, we compared the Keltec P3AT and Ruger LCP. Now, I've carried the Ruger for over a month and have range tested it.
I had a buttload of .380 ammo from testing the two Keltecs. The Ruger ate all of it without a problem. Aguilla ammo, which was several years old, provided a misfire but that's it. No failures of any kind attributed to the pistol!
I carry using Federal personal defense 90 grain hollow point loads and they feed perfectly. From the scary end of the barrel, they are some ugly little pills.
I'm a big guy and have hands the size of hams. I have no problem shooting this pistol accurately or hanging on to it. The LCP is a winner in all categories! get one....get two. Yup, they're a bit pricey but you get value for your money. You can trust this little buddy to be there for you.
The ONLY beef I have is that if you hit a dud round, you can't just squeeze the trigger again. The slide must be racked back for another try.

The recoil didn''t suprise me as the weight has a lot to do with it. Sights not necessary...just point and shoot. If you want something lightweight and good protection you need this pistol. I have carried it everywhere in my cargo pants and it has gone unnoticed. Thanks Ruger!

The Ruger LCP

Purchased new LCP and took it to the range for a test run. Shot ball and my own hand loads through it without a hitch. Did my departmental 50 round duty qualification with Federal hollow points. The pistol ran great. I was able to keep all but one round on a 9 by 11 target insert shooting out to 25 yards. I'm pretty happy with this one. It will replace the Kel Tec 32.

Where to get bullets?

I live in Las Vegas and am having a hard time finding any bullets in 380 other than the stuff that is over $1/bullet at the local gunstores. Any ideas where to get Winchester White Box, Winchester Silvertip, or American Eagle FMJ? By the way, Ruger customer service suggested Winchester 95gr
FMJ or if you want to use a hollow point the Hornady 90gr JHP/XTP. Remington 88gr FMJ, Cor-Bon 90gr JHP and Speer Lawman 95gr TMJ are known to not chamber fully.
As to the gun itself, very accurate at 3 and 7 yards, and pretty good at 15 yards. Long pull on trigger is actually a good safety feature. Flash is clearly visible out the back, so night shooting could be affected. But for a small pocket gun, this one is hard to beat.

I had been waiting for a company to produce a .380 auto that I could depend on. Heard too many stories about the Keltecs & wasn''t about to buy one. Just bought two of the Ruger LCPs with 4 extra mags. Took my wife out shooting last weekend and put about 100 rounds through them. Not one jam or misfeed. Excellent pistols. Have had Glocks for many years, but am thoroughly impressed with the Rugers. Would reccommend this weapon with no reservations.

Ruger LCP

Have had it for about two weeks. Run about 200 rounds through it. It likes ball ammunition but fails to feed with hollow point. Slide just doesn't go quite to battery. I bought an extra magazine - it comes with only one - and it is the same. Leaves the cases with a dent from the bottom of the chamber/top of feed ramp. Carries easy and is very light. Trigger is long and heavy but shoots accurate if I do my part. This is a tilt-barrel locking breech pistol - not a blowback design. Should deal well with +P or +P+ ammunition.

While loitering in the gun shop, I asked about the new LCP. Of course, they did not have one... The backorder is horrendous. But another customer happened to be carrying and let me handle his LCP. I compared it to the Kel-Tec and there was no comaprison at all. The Ruger is a firearm, the Kel-Tec is a capgun. Fit and finish is superb, ergonomics are great even for a large hand. While I've not fired it yet, I liked it so much I put my name on the backorder list. After I finally get one and fire it, I'll post another review.

comparing the LCP and Kel-Tec P3at

I have two Kel-Tec P3at's and one Ruger LCP. Carried the KT for 3 years & $40k + miles. Ruger evolved from the Kel-Tec but they are NOT the same! I bought a boatload of .380 ammo and tried each until I was sure a load would work. When the right load is found, these pistols work 100% with a FIRM hand hold. The pistols HATE some loads! You must test each load to trust your life to these little shooters!
Differences: Extractor- KT flat spring steel, R- coil spring loaded steel block. Mags do not interchange as the locking notch differs. Mag bases differ a little, too. Mag cost R- $27, KT- $14. Trigger guard R- Thin, KT- thick. Both- Locked breech which is unusual and very high tech for a pocket pistol! Both come with one mag and a zipper pouch. Manual slide stop R- yes, KT- no. Neither hold slide open at last shot.
Price actually paid- R $329, KT $235. Some assembly pins differ on each. Serial # R- cast into frame, KT- engraved on back piece. Ruger grip feels a bit more solid and finer finish on casting.

you know that drives cost up for demand.well i paid top dollar for mine LCP $400.00. if it is quality like ruger
has been know to prduce than i am happy. quality guns are not cheap. seescamp$$$$,beretta tomcat$$$ so ruger lcp$$$

Just got my new "Elsie Pea" yesterday. Brought it home and swabbed off the half pint of grease and oil it came immersed in and headed for the range. Fired 100 rounds of Winchester FNJ's and 50 rounds of American Eagle FMJ's without a single hiccup. Accuracy out to 15 yards was surprising for the little girl and recoil is extremely manageable, even though I can only get 1 and 1/2 of my fat little fingers on the grip. Mine is a 2nd generation, so there is no evidence of the peening on the frame some of the 1st generation pistols had. Ruger has now fixed that problem by machining out the area that was having the problem. I'm waiting for some HP ammo to try, as no one in my area carries anything other than paper punchers in .380, but I'm sure they'll function fine, too. This is a high quality, well built pocket pistol that will follow me everywhere as soon as I get some adequate ammo. To all of you whining about Ruger "ripping off" Kel-tec...It ain't even close...like comparing a Lexus to a Yugo!!!

Ruger LCP .380 First Test

The Ruger LCP .380 appears to be a worthwhile investment for a small, thin and easy to conceal semi-auto. The first trip the range was uneventful. Fired approximately 100 rounds with both standard and +P ammunition and had one malfunciton (stovepipe - failure to fully eject) near the end of the test firing. The weapon has an extremely smooth but long trigger pull. Trigger finger placement is best when you use the end of your fingertip. Depressing the trigger near the end of the first digit requires you to compress your finger so far that the fingertip is practically touching the grip before the weapon fires. As mentioned in earlier reviews, it isn't a target weapon and is for defensive, short-range use only. For that purpose, this weapons should serve well. I just wish it had come with two magazines.

Great gun for CC, shot at range multiple times, not a SINGLE malfunction of ANY kind with variety of ammo. The only issue I have, and have not seen this addressed in any review on any site is ANYBODY BESIDES ME CONCERNED ABOUT THE LACK OF TRIGGER/SAFETY BLOCK ON THIS GUN. Owners manual repeatedly warns that it may fire if dropped with round chambered. Repeatedly recommends it be carried on empty chamber, which is useless to me. Any comments?

Why would you want sights???

Why would you want sights on ole Elsey?? Her purpose is not for shooting down range. She's for reminding some gentleman of his manners when he is in your face, not for a down range fight-- there are other pistols for that purpose. I acquired one of the first of Elsey in Dallas-- shoots very well as a particularly small concealable pistol. But this pistol lacks sight for a reason. If you want sights, you want a bigger pistol for another purpose.

Problematic like Keltec P3AT

This gun is a copy of Keltec P3AT and has the same reliability problem. Problems so far I have spotted after researching are broken trigger mechanism, broken firing pin, rough chamber and barrel hood inducing failures to feed and frame peening with the ejected shells. My LCP has rough chamber and failures to feed problem and Ruger won't send a new barrel out. They want me to send my gun back to them and wait for 4-6 weeks.
My LCP reliability records so far
1st outing - shot it out of box - Winchester FMJ 170 rounds. 1 failure to feed with the 146th round
2nd outing - Remington UMC FMJ 50 rounds - 5 FTF, 30 rounds of Winchester FMJ - no jams.
3rd outing - Remington UMC FMJ 50 rounds - 4 FTF
4th outing - "fluff and buff" done - UMC FMJ 50 rounds, Winchester 100 rounds - 0 jam
5th outing - UMC FMJ 50 rounds - 0 jam
6th outing - UMC JHP 88gr 30 rounds - 2 FTF (3rd round and 27th round)
The gun was cleaned and lubed after each outing.

After recently attending the NRA convention in Louisville, KY (May 2008) I was able to handle several of these small pistols. I have been considering the purchase of a small pistol for concealed carry, but the Kel-Tec didn't grab my interest, and I didn't like the feel of it. My experience with Ruger goes back 30+ years, and their quality coupled with customer support was important in my decision. This firearm has several unique features over Kel-Tec such as a slide lock, ergonomical feel to the grips, and improved styling. The only thing that is lacking are the inadequate sights on the released model. At the show one Ruger rep showed my an LCP with 3 point night sights - this is what I recommend you order even if there would be an extra cost.

I agonized over the caliber vs. carrying concealed. I had a sub-compact XD-40 and it was too heavy and wide. For carrying in my pocket it is the best weapon on the market! I've fire over a 100 rounds of Winchester FMJ and hollow points not a single malfunction. This is the first pistol my wife ever fired, even with the small sights her first four shot were in a 4" group at 7 yards!!! Love it!!! I won't carry anything else concealed!!!

I picked mine up today at Cabela's for 299.00 it has a slide lock. Fit and Finish looks to be great. Feels solid on pulling slide back. This gun is so small it's not much biiger than a pack of cig's. The barrel seams a bit thin but that might just be me being use to springfield and glock 45's. Although knowing it's a ruger I feel confident if this ever becomes an issue they will be there for me. A+ for making something small enough to put in a pocket and really leaves hardly a trace of anything in my pocket.
I think the big lock they give you with the gun will work better on my motorcycle front disc the lock is bigger than the gun but a very nice lock.

I picked up my LCP on May Day. It is absolutely THE best "pocket gun" on the market! Superior in every way to the competition. This gun is what the Kel-Tec P-3AT could have been, but isn't. With typical Ruger quality and reliability, Ruger will sell a lot of these guns. They may be a bit hard to get now, but I guarantee that it's worth the wait. :)

My Ruger LCP fired Winchester White Box, Winchester Silvertip and Corbon hollowpoint ammo without fail. The sights are shallow but usable. The trigger pull is long and hard, but I was still able to put 13 rounds in the ten ring of a silhouette at 7 yards with ease. No malfunctions of any kind. Typical Ruger quality. Outstanding! Super small design, but it works even with my large hands. Ruger is going to sell very, very many of these.

I've been looking for a pocket pistol for some time. .22lr and .25 acp are not enough "ummph" to be considered self defense practical in my book. I considered at the .32acp tomcat. I went to my favorite gun shop to look one over and saw the Kel tech in the more potent .380acp. My buddy who owns the shop recommended the Ruger LCP, stating,"C'mon man its Ruger, you know it has to be of great quality for a reasonable price." I told him to order one for me. Please Ruger get this pistol off back order, I can't wait to get it!

Ruger's New LCP Pistol

I just got back from the Shot Show in Las Vegas and I was fortunate enough to handle The new LCP 380 Auto from Ruger Arms. At first glance LCP looks very similar to the Kel-Tec P3AT pistol but upon further inspection there are some differences in construction and features that I think are an improvement over the Kel-Tec. Most important is the slide lock on the Ruger LCP. This allows the user to lock the slide to the rear when the LCP is loaded or unloaded. I really like this feature for the safety aspect and because it operates similar to the other firearms I own making training easier. The ergonomics on the Ruger Arms LCP are nicer than the Kel-Tec and the grip feels more like a gun that a deck of playing cards. The lightness and compact size mean this will be a gun that is so easy to carry one could easily forget they have it, which could be it’s only drawback. I have been considering the Kel-Tec for some time now for my wife but the Ruger Arms LCP looks to be a better built gun and seeing as how price will be in a similar range I would rather purchase from Ruger Arms. All the Ruger Arms rifles and pistols I own have always been reliable and accurate and I see no reason why this pistol should be any different.
